    Grow Bags & Container Gardening

    Plants love grow bags.

This summer I was excited to get gardening again and make use of grow bags among my container gardening. Bigger pots can be expensive and somewhat hard to come by in terms of selection. Many of them are just too heavy for my lifestyle of get up and go. Most large containers you find in traditional flower nurseries are designed for flowers and less so with growing food in mind.

Made of fabric, grow bags are lightweight and pack down easily making them a good option for growing larger plants like tomatoes, watermelon or pumpkin using an 8-10 gallon or larger container. When container gardening, these fabric gardening bags make it easy to move plants if needed. I like to move my container garden around as my garden grows. They’re also inexpensive so I can afford to grow more plants.

Not Just for Cannabis Growers. Vegetables love them too.

Popular with both cannabis and vegetable growers for, grow bags are the best way to container garden.

    Air Pruning Prevents Root-Bound Plants

Because grow bags are made of fabric, unlike plastic, they prevent plants from becoming root bound by air pruning your plants.

    Where to Buy Grow Bags

As awesome as grow bags are many gardeners are still not aware of them which makes them somewhat hard to come by. The big home & garden centres either did not have what I was looking for or they charged way more than what I wound up paying after searching my local grow stores and nurseries. I came across two different sellers of the simple black fabric bags I was after. One is Root Pouch and the other is an unbranded wholesale bag. I was happy to pay the local shops the $6.99 ea. for the 6 bags I bought this season but most of theseare being bought online for less than half that.

I planted strawberries and zucchini in an 8 gallon bag and I planted pumpkin and watermelon in the 10 gallon bags.

All of the plants are doing really well. Both myself and my roommates are enjoying watching these beauties grow and flower around us. I am excited about expanding the amount of plants and grow bags this coming year. One of the things I like about container gardening is that because I can pick up the bagged plants, it makes it possible to gift a big plant to someone. 🙂

Dr.Bronner’s – Highly Recommend this Biodegradable Fair-Trade Soap

Dr.Bronner’s began in 1948 when master soapmaker Emmanuel Bronner, who descending from generations of soapmakers before him, combined soapmaking with a message; “We are All-One or None!”. Bronner’s Pure Castille Soap is a superb ecological and biodegradable soap who’s vision of social and environmental responsibility can be read all over the label. I choose Bronner’s because it is

    1. Biodegradable
    2. Certified cruelty-free
    3. Feels and smells great
    4. Economical
    5. Certified Fair Trade
    6. Certified Organic
    7. Commitment to Zero Waste
    8. One Bottle – Many Purposes!

Their line of soaps include, pure-castille liquid soap which can be used for face, body, hair, food, dishes, mopping, pets & more, which comes in several scents (I like Tea Tree for that extra clean feeling). More soaps in their line include pure-castille bar soap & organic sugar soap which promise to be nourishing, no dryness! They also have organic lotions, toothpaste, shaving soaps, hair care products, balms, lip balms, hand sanitizer and more.

    The Templeton, Vancouver BC

“Jukebox-lined eatery with free-run eggs & breakfast faves, plus organic burgers & classic shakes.”

Whenever I’m in Vancouver, visiting the Templeton is top of my list of priorities. Old school diner serving up tasty comfort food and vegetarian dishes, this iconic eatery is nestled in among the tattoo parlors, hotels, hostels, and theatres of Granville street. Near the Granville Bridge, it’s up the street from nights out at Vancouver night life destinations like the Commodore Ballroom, Orpheum Theatre, Cinematheque etc. This area is very busy to visit! Usually I get off the train on Granville at the Hudsons Bay, and start working my way through the crowds lining the busy street. This area is a lot of fun but after so much walking and activity, I just need to sit in a booth, chill and eat the best macaroni ever. Visit http://thetempleton.ca/

  • Common Loaf Bake Shop Tofino, BC

Common Loaf Bake Shop Tofino, BC

The winter of 2004 I dwelled in a camper in the rainforests of Tofino BC. It was one of the rainiest winters on record and this meant for a couple weeks we were paddling from our doorstep to the main road. In cold, rainy environments, the best thing to do is crank the heat and eat pastries. There were several cool business’ around the area at that time which contributed to Tofino’s legendary cool factor, appealing to surfer’s, outdoorsy types and traveler’s the world over. Common Loaf Bake Shop was then and still is now keeping the coast cozy with many of my in house comfort favourites. 15 years on, their veggie rolls are still calling me back to this popular Canadian destination and a top local Tofino bakery.
