WBGO was introduced to me by a roommate. It has since become my favourite go to dj for dinner party background music and just good old anytime music. This longtime favourite of Jazz enthusiasts broadcasts out of Newark New Jersey.

Having been formed in the 1970’s as a response to the 1967 Newark riots, the station is a cultural institution that has its roots in activism. The organization received wide reaching support from the Newark community and organizations that include the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Newark Public School System. WBGO launched in 1979 as ‘an independent, community-based, not-for-profit, public radio station that would champion jazz-an American art form’.

WBGO reaches more than 400 000 listeners weekly within the New York / New Jersey metro area. They are also heard by millions more listeners nationally through partnerships with NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, together delivering jazz content and producing programs like Jazz Night in America. They can now be heard online around the world by visiting https://www.wbgo.org.
